Well Storm Dennis 💨💦💨 arrived overnight making the planned walk needing to be revised, no one fancied being blown over the cliffs! Setting off from the hostel we all set off on the revised route. The group split into two after a short distance saying they were going to complete a longer walk, while Alan, Janet, Jane, Deborah, Roger and myself opted for the shorter but still blustery shorter option.

I believe we peaked at Beacon Hill, an impressive 100m above sea level! Eventually we dropped down to walk along a disused railway track which provided some much needed respite and some unexpected cake as there was a little stall selling homemade cake and drinks with just an honesty box for the takings. Our group managed to all squeeze onto a bench at the cycle hire, sales and railway accommodation alongside the Whitby/Scarborough coastal rail trail cinder track (or old Railway Station) to eat our lunch before heading over a quite impressive viaduct. At this point we were informed that the other group, namely Geoff, Paul, Martin, Mark, Karen, Andy, Judith and Ray (yes you will be named and shamed) were just 1.5 hours behind as informed by Martin in a phone call to Jane, making us think they were making good time on the longer route in the stormy conditions. After the viaduct, we went down a very steep slope and back to the hostel. Some went for afternoon tea in the town, others back to their accommodation.

It wasn't until later when in the Star Inn for our evening meal, that Alan blew their cover. The full truth being the so called longer walk group had actually walked less distance and at the point of the phone call were in the pub!! Shameful blatant fib 🤥

Must say a superb meal tonight enjoyed by all.

For the serious walkers, we found this sheltered spot in an old railway station for our lunch.
