Weekend away in the Yorkshire Dales

Friday 5th to Sunday 7th February 2021

For this trip, we are proposing to base ourselves at the Premier Inn at Gargrave which is aproximately 4 miles to the west of Skipton on the banks of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and on the southern side of the Yorkshie Dales. Rooms cost between £58 and £98 for the two nights depending on what options you choose. Meals will be taken at the adjacent Anchor Inn.

We will travel up on Friday, walk Friday for those travelling up early, then walk Saturday and have another walk on Sunday before returning home.

You need to make your own booking at the Premier Inn or somewhere else nearby. The details of the Premier Inn are:

  1. Address: Hellifield Road, Gargrave, Skipton BD23 3NB
  2. What3Words: ///backyards.dazzling.bucket
  3. Phone: 0333 321 8798

Please send Martin an e-mail to let him know you are coming.

The strenuousness rating for this weekend is moderate. Walking routes will as far as possible be tailored to suit those attending.

Easter in the Lake District

Friday 2nd to Monday 5th April 2021

We have booked 3 twin rooms (£210 for three nights), 1 double room (£210 for three nights) and 3 single rooms (£150 for three nights) at the Bower House Inn in Eskdale. Prices include breakfast; evening meals will be taken in the Inn.

Nestled in the Eskdale Valley, the Bower House Inn is ideally situated for exploring the beautiful countryside or walking the fells. Set in the heart of the Western Fells of Lakeland, Scafell, Great Gable and Wastwater are all within easy reach.

Hopefully, there will be sufficient walk leaders to allow a range of walk difficulty, but the rating for the weekend is moderate to strenuous.

We will travel up on Friday leaving at approx. 8am and travel back Monday afternoon.

At the present time, you will need to travel up separately to the Lake District, but if this changes, we will arrange to share cars.

You need to send a completed booking form (to be found at the end of the Walking Club Newsletter) together with your full payment to Alan by Sunday 14th March to book your place.

Walking routes will as far as possible be tailored to suit those attending.

Places may be limited. First come first served; members before non-members.

West Highland Way Trip

Friday 4th June to Saturday 12th June 2021

walkwalkwalkStrenuous

We are looking to walk the West Highland Way, which starts at Milngavie on the outskirts of Glasgow and travels north for 96 miles to Fort William.

From gentle rolling hill and moorland it covers most terrains through to the high mountains of Glencoe having passed dense woodland en-route with the spectacular scenery of Loch Lomond and open remoteness of the Rannoch Moor.

We will be staying in twin-bedded rooms in B&Bs with a full breakfast included and making use of a luggage transfer service so we only need to carry a day pack on the route. There are pubs at each stop where we can buy evening meals.

The means of getting up there has yet to be decided but one option is to take the train, the return fare to Glasgow is about £100. The baggage transfer company will provide a driven minibus back from Fort William for £200 (£25 per person if we have 8)

Itinerary:-

  1. 4th June - Travel to Milngavie.
  2. 5th June - Milngavie – Drymen: 12.5 miles. Good footpaths, tracks and lanes, mainly flat and low-lying; some walking on tarmac.
  3. 6th June - Drymen – Rowardennan: 15 miles. Mainly good paths and tracks with one challenging climb. The beautiful lakeside section along Loch Lomond is twisty and undulating.
  4. 7th June - Rowardennan – Inverarnan: 13.5 miles. A demanding and isolated walk on a path along Loch Lomond, occasionally tough underfoot with many ups and downs. It includes some quite challenging sections but offers superb scenery.
  5. 8th June - Inverarnan – Tyndrum: 12 miles. Generally good paths and gravel tracks with a gradual ascent into the Highlands.
  6. 9th June - Tyndrum – Kingshouse: 19 miles. A trek across beautiful, isolated and exposed moorland which can be a little challenging in poor weather conditions. The route passes over the Drovers’ road between Bridge of Orchy and Inveroran with large panoramic views and little visibility of civilisation.
  7. 10th June - Kingshouse – Kinlochleven: 9 miles. Another remote walk with occasional rough stretches and one sharp climb followed by a long descent into Kinlochleven.
  8. 11th June - Kinlochleven – Fort William: 15 miles. Starting with a steep climb out of Kinlochleven the route follows the contour of a valley which offers little respite from the weather, before forest cover is reached outside of Fort William.
  9. 12th June – Return to Peterborough.

Cost

The cost will be £595, but we can possibly lower the cost by going for cheaper accommodation. Not included in the price is travel to Milngavie and back from Fort William, along with lunch and dinner each day.

We will need a deposit of £50 by the end of November, and the balance by 15th May. We will be looking to book as soon as possible because of the popularity of the trail.

Booking

If you would like to come, please complete the booking form contained in the latest newsletter and send it to Paul with your £50 deposit by November 30th. Places may be limited, first come first served.
